How to Make XR an Indispensable Part of People's Lives?

As an XR enthusiast and developer, I have been pondering a question: How can we get more ordinary people interested in XR and willing to use XR devices frequently every day, making XR an indispensable part of their lives?

The market’s best-selling XR devices like the Quest 2, Quest 3, Pico 4, and Apple’s latest Vision Pro all excite their users with immersive experiences. However, most people still hesitate to buy these devices. This is not only because XR device content is mostly limited to entertainment and games and lacks killer apps, but also because these devices have not reached standards in weight, comfort, battery life, and price to win over consumers. In other words, we already have phones, computers, and game consoles—why buy another XR device that will be put aside after a few uses?

Recently, at the SIGGRAPH conference, Jensen Huang and Mark Zuckerberg discussed AI and smart glasses. Zuckerberg mentioned that Ray-Ban Meta has launched its second-generation product and expects that tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of people will use smart glasses in the future, possibly thanks to the integration of AI technology. A pair of smart glasses capable of voice calls, summoning an AI assistant, providing AR functions, and sharing life moments could change the current situation. In fact, as early as 2013, Google released Google Glass, and in 2015 Microsoft launched HoloLens, but these devices did not succeed in the consumer market due to high prices, weight, lack of content ecosystems, and unpopularity of AI technology. Now, with the rapid development of AI technology and significant investments from major companies, smart glasses are expected to explode in popularity in the coming years. According to research, the compound annual growth rate of smart glasses is expected to be 16.6% by 2033, with a market size of about $72 billion.

Pros and Cons of Smart Glasses

Pros

  • 1Portability: Smart glasses are lighter and more comfortable to wear than traditional XR devices.

  • Function Integration: They integrate multiple functions such as voice calls, AI assistants, and AR features, making them useful not only for entertainment but also for work, study, and daily life.

  • Instant Information: With AR/AI technology, users can access needed information at any time, such as navigation, translation, and notifications.

  • Social Sharing: They allow real-time capturing and sharing of life moments, enhancing social interaction.

Cons

  • High Price: Current smart glasses are still relatively expensive, making them unaffordable for ordinary consumers.

  • Screen Technology Limitations: Narrow field of view and insufficient screen brightness.

  • Battery Life: The battery life needs improvement to meet the demands of long-term use.

  • Content Ecosystem: Despite their rich functionality, they lack a diverse range of applications and content to support an optimal user experience.

  • Privacy Concerns: The camera and recording functions of smart glasses may raise privacy and security concerns.

Usage Scenarios for Smart Glasses

  • Work Collaboration: In industries like healthcare, construction, and manufacturing, smart glasses can help employees collaborate and train more efficiently.

  • Education and Training: Through AR technology, they can provide immersive learning experiences, making education more engaging and vivid.

  • Daily Life: Features like navigation, translation, and health monitoring can greatly facilitate users’ daily routines.

  • Entertainment and Social Interaction: AR technology can offer new gaming and social experiences.

With the support of AI technology and continuous optimization of user experience, smart glasses are likely to become an indispensable part of people’s lives in the future. Although they currently face challenges in terms of price, battery life, and content ecosystem, with technological advancements and market development, the widespread adoption of smart glasses is just around the corner. As XR enthusiasts and developers, we look forward to this day and will continue to strive to promote the development of this technology.
